Love Lifted Me, Love Lifted Me,
When nothing else could help,
Love Lifted Me!
(1912 - James Rowe / Howard E. Smith)
Growing up in the Baptist church, I can remember singing 'Love Lifted Me' quite often.
It always struck a nerve when we got to the phrase 'When nothing else could help ...'
That evokes thoughts about the wasted time, the times I sought help from places and people who were not equipped and / or willing to assist.
I think about being at the end of options, all out of alternatives and devoid of suggestions.
'When nothing else' intimates that other ideas have been considered and tried.
'When nothing else' signifies the onslaught of desperation, accompanied by doubt and fear.
'When nothing else' warns that all other resources have been depleted, all other opportunities have diminished and all other doors have been bolted shut.
When nothing else could help - When nothing else could provide - When nothing else could deliver - When nothing else could save - there is still One. His name is LOVE and He specializes in heavy lifting.
LOVE bears heavy burdens, breaks through barriers, covers flaws.
LOVE gets past offenses, forgives hurts and washes out the stain and stench of sin.
When nothing else could help - LOVE.
LOVE came through.
LOVE showed up.
LOVE worked it out.
LOVE fixed it.
LOVE conquered ALL.
LOVE WON!
